What We Heard From Families
What Families Told Us
Nearly 500 Caregivers Shared What Reading at Home Really Looks Like
Before building Charlie’s Bookshelf, we asked caregivers about their biggest challenges with books at home — and what they hoped a service like this could bring to their family.
Families weren’t struggling to value reading.
Again and again, caregivers told us they already loved books. They wanted to read more. They wanted their children to grow up surrounded by stories.
The challenge was keeping that love alive while managing the realities of family life: the cost of new books, overflowing shelves, limited time, library trips, and the mental load of choosing what to read next.
“Books are expensive, and take up a lot of space! We LOVE to read, but don’t have all the money or room for as many books as we’d like.”
They wanted fresh stories without more clutter.
Many families described the same tension: wanting a home rich with books, but not wanting every shelf, basket, and corner to overflow.
“I love the idea of getting fun new books in the mail, but sending them back so they aren’t taking up a ton of space.”
They wanted help discovering books their children would love.
Caregivers weren’t just looking for more books. They were looking for the right books — stories that matched their child’s age, interests, stage, and growing imagination.
“I hope that someone else does the mental work and finds us age-appropriate books.”
Most of all, they wanted connection.
The most powerful responses weren’t really about books at all. They were about bedtime rituals, family bonding, imagination, less screen time, and the hope of raising children who love reading for life.
“I hope it brings us moments of joy, curiosity, and connection.”
“I want her to have the same love for books that I had as a child and my mom gave to me.”
And they wanted wonder.
Families imagined the excitement of new stories arriving at the door. A little surprise. A little ritual. A reason for children to run toward books with bright eyes.
“I hope Charlie’s Bookshelf becomes a little corner of magic in our home.”
That’s why we built Charlie’s Bookshelf.
Not because families need more things.
Because they want more stories, more connection, more discovery, and a simpler way to raise readers.
Less cost. Less clutter. More wonder.
