Charlie’s Bookshelf

The Bookshelf Guide

Everything you need to know about swaps, Story Credits, shipping, returns, and your Forever Shelf.

How does Charlie’s Bookshelf work?

Choose 5 books from the Endless Shelf. We ship them to your door. Read at your family’s pace, then swap when you’re ready for new stories.

How many books can I have at one time?

Members may have 5 books checked out at a time.

How do I complete a swap?

Log into Your Shelf, open your subscription, and select Return & Build New Shelf.

For each book, choose whether to Return, Hold a little longer, or Keep forever. Then build your next shelf by selecting up to 5 new books.

Can I save books for later?

Yes. While browsing the Endless Shelf, simply tap the heart on any book to add it to your Wishlist.

Your Wishlist is a convenient place to save stories you may want for a future shelf.

How do returns work?

Returning books is easy.

Place the books you’d like to return back into your Charlie’s Bookshelf shipping box and reusable book bag, attach the prepaid return label included with your shelf, and send them on their way.

Once your books are in transit, we’ll begin preparing your next reading adventure.

Do I need to return all 5 books?

No. During the swap process, you can choose which books to return, which books to hold a little longer, and which books you’d like to keep forever.

Are swaps really unlimited?

Yes. Swaps are unlimited. Read at your family’s pace and swap whenever you’re ready for new adventures.

Do I need to swap by a certain date?

No. There are no due dates and no late fees. Keep your shelf as long as you’d like.

While every family is different, most members choose to swap their shelf every 4–6 weeks. Some swap more frequently, while others less. You'll find the rhythm that works best for your family.

What if my child loves a book and wants to read it again?

That’s exactly what we hope for.

You can choose to hold a book a little longer, keep it forever using a Story Credit or purchase it directly for your Forever Shelf.

What are Story Credits?

Members receive 1 Story Credit each month their membership is active.

Each Story Credit can be redeemed for one book of your choice, regardless of price.

How do I redeem a Story Credit?

Story Credits can be redeemed during the swap process. When choosing what to do with each book, select Keep forever and apply an available Story Credit.

Do Story Credits expire?

No. Story Credits remain available while your membership is active and can be redeemed whenever you’re ready.

Can I keep a book even if I don’t have a Story Credit?

Yes. Books can also be purchased directly for your Forever Shelf.

How long does shipping take?

Most shipments arrive within 2–8 business days, depending on your location.

Are the books new or used?

Every book begins its journey as a brand-new book purchased by Charlie’s Bookshelf.

Over time, books are shared among member families. Since our members are book lovers, we know and expect books to be treated with care.

What if a book gets damaged?

Accidents happen. If a book becomes damaged, just reach out to our Care Team at hello@charliesbookshelf.com.

What happens to returned books?

Returned books are inspected, gently cleaned if needed, and prepared for their next reader.

What ages are the books for?

Charlie’s Bookshelf is designed for the years when parents read picture books to their child. Our collection is thoughtfully curated for children from birth through approximately age 8, though older siblings are always welcome to squeeze in and listen too (or even be the reader!).

Be on the lookout: an Older Readers collection may be coming soon.

How do I cancel my membership?

Memberships can be managed anytime through your Shelf.

Simply log into your membership portal and select Cancel Membership.

If you cancel, you'll have 14 days to decide what you'd like to do with the books currently on your shelf. You may return them, keep them using available Story Credits, or purchase them directly through your portal.

Books that are not returned or purchased within the 14-day period may be charged at their replacement value.

Who's Charlie?

We're glad you asked.

Charlie is the little reader who inspired Charlie's Bookshelf. His mom read to him every night from the time he was born.

By age 5, his love of reading was stronger than ever, but so were the cost and clutter of keeping up with a growing home library. When she couldn't find a service like this, she decided to create it.

Charlie is 7 now and would like everyone to know: "The love for reading is still there" and "you're never too old for reading."
