Where It All Began
Charlie's Bookshelf began with one small ritual: a mother reading to her son every night.
Three picture books most nights. Five if Charlie asked for more. The stories changed, but the ritual didn't.
By the time Charlie turned five, the love for reading hadn't slowed down. The books, though, had taken over just about everything. Shelves were full. Piles were forming. An entire dresser had been surrendered to picture books.
Melissa didn't want fewer stories. She wanted a better way to keep them flowing through their home.
What if families could choose the books they wanted, have them arrive at their door, read them for as long as they liked, and then make room for something new?
And what if the favorites they couldn't bear to part with could simply stay?
She looked for something like it. She couldn't find it.
But before building it, she wanted to know whether other families were wishing for something similar.

So she asked other caregivers.
More than 500 caregivers across the U.S. shared what reading at home really looked like for their families.
The desire to read with their children was already there. What made it harder was the cost of constantly buying new books, shelves that filled quickly, the work of finding just-right stories, and routines that didn't always leave time for regular library trips.
Beneath all of it was something much bigger: they wanted more connection, more discovery, and children who would grow up loving books.

So Melissa built Charlie's Bookshelf.
A picture book membership designed to make a rich reading life a little easier to sustain. Families choose five books at a time from a thoughtfully vetted collection, read together at their own pace, and swap for fresh stories whenever they're ready. The favorites get to stay, earning a permanent place on the Forever Shelf.
